Where the site's images come from and under which licenses.
Most of the site’s images come from Wikimedia Commons and other open sources and are in the public domain or under free licenses. For some people no free photo exists; we then use an image under fair use - on this site only, for non-commercial education - and remove it at the rights holder’s request (write to us). Some portraits were restored, colorized or turned into photo-like images with AI. Each portrait’s author, license, source and any such changes are shown on that person’s page. The images on the home page are listed below.
The site’s text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license: you may reuse and adapt it with a credit to «Know Your Own» and a link, sharing your version under the same license.
