The physicist who became a generation’s voice
In 1996 Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, a physics graduate of Lviv University, started a PhD in theoretical physics. By then he had already been singing with Okean Elzy for two years. He defended his dissertation, on the supersymmetry of an electron in a magnetic field, only in 2009: through all the tours and albums, the work took many years.
Svyatoslav Vakarchuk (in official transliteration, Sviatoslav) was born in 1975 in Mukachevo into the family of the physicist Ivan Vakarchuk, later rector of Lviv University and Minister of Education, and grew up in Lviv, where he also went to music school.
Okean Elzy
In 1994 he became the vocalist of the newly formed Lviv band Okean Elzy (Elza’s Ocean), its leader and the author of most of its songs. In 1995 the band won the Chervona Ruta festival, dedicated to the memory of Volodymyr Ivasiuk, and in 1998 it moved to Kyiv and released its debut album, Tam, de Nas Nema (Where We Are Not). Then came Ya na Nebi Buv, Model, Supersymetriia, Gloria and more. Later Vakarchuk initiated and paid for a monument to Ivasiuk in central Lviv. He is an Honored Artist of Ukraine (2005), holds the Order of Freedom (2016), and in 2025 received the title National Legend of Ukraine.
Politics and war
Vakarchuk has twice been a member of parliament. In 2007 he was elected on the list of the Our Ukraine–People’s Self-Defense bloc, but he gave up his seat in 2008. In 2019 he founded the party Holos (Voice), headed its list and returned to the Verkhovna Rada, and in 2020 he gave up his seat again.
From the first days of the full-scale invasion in 2022 he travelled around Ukraine singing for soldiers and medics, for civilians in metro stations and in hospitals. At the same time he signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and received the rank of lieutenant.
Why it matters today
Since the mid-1990s Okean Elzy has sung in Ukrainian and has been among the country’s most popular bands. During the war Vakarchuk took his concerts to where life is hardest: to soldiers, into hospitals and metro stations.
